The buzz

There is a lot of talk about two buzz-words in the computer world: Quantum Computing and Edge Computing. Far away from each other as one describes the new big trend and technology advance – using quantum physics to increase the computational speed, whilst the other is all about how computing capability is delivered to the end-user.

Xiaomi Phones Not Recommended

Lithuanian officials advise the population about some worrying features in Xiaomi phones, recommending stopping using or buying phones from this manufacturer. According to several news outlets, Xiaomi phones run background processes that can detect and blank out politically heated keywords and send back to base information about the owners’ activities. The data was allegedly sent outside Europe – to a server in Singapore – well outside the European space with stringent privacy rules. The Lithuanian officials’ comments included Huawei in the advisory.

Both phone manufacturers have denied the allegations.

Facebook Unveiled Ray-Ban Smart Glasses

It looks like augmented reality (AR) is one step closer, and the most recent big news is the Facebook – Ray Ban partnership in this space. However, with recent clarifications that the joint operation is for glasses without an integrated display (!), one must wonder if it’s nothing but another promotional gimmick…

Google Cloud struggling to gain more market share

According to an article on InfoWorld, despite the efforts of its CEO Thomas Kurian, it looks like Google can’t get its cloud-native ecosystem to gain momentum Some companies such as 20th Century Fox have indeed opted in to use it for advanced AI and machine learning, but not many others have decided to go all-in. There is, however, some light at the end of the tunnel: Sabre and Deutsche bank signed long term deals in 2020 so there may be some hope.
